No Greater Love

The last few weeks we have been watching ‘The Pacific’ an HBO miniseries narrated by Tom Hanks. The series is largely based on the memoirs of a Marine called Eugene Sledge who experienced prolonged combat against the famously ferocious Japanese army on the tropical islands of the Pacific. Sledge kept a diary of his time there in his Marine issue Bible.
No one could completely describe what those soldiers went through, other than to say it was hell with occasional light moments. Like when the blackened and bloodied Marines get back from a long and terrible fire fight to find the menu outside the food tent has three options: rice without beef, rice without chicken or rice without shrimp.
Sledge found it hard to re-adjust to civilian life. In his memoir The Old Breed he writes, ‘As I strolled the streets of Mobile, civilian life seemed so strange, people rushed around in a hurry about seemingly insignificant things.’ He had been somewhere others had not been, he had seen things others had not seen, he had been pushed to the very edge of himself. He had seen people lay down their lives for their friends and he had been prepared to do the same. Nothing was ever the same again.
A journalist embedded with US troops in Afghanistan writes that the soldiers there spend every day prepared to lay down their lives for each other. He said that no religion could offer that kind of love. But one man did.
Jesus went somewhere others had not been, He saw things others had not seen, He was pushed to the very edge of himself. He lay down his life and nothing was ever the same again. Even in a hell hole on a Pacific island, He spoke through the pages of Eugene Sledge’s Bible -
‘Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.’ John 13 v 13, NIV.
Whatever you go through – more sure than day and night, war or peace is Jesus – and He loves you.
